Assam CM Urges Rahul Gandhi to Exclude Gaurav Gogoi from Sensitive Foreign Delegation, Citing Alleged Links to Pakistan

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi not to include Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP and Deputy Leader of the Lok Sabha, in a sensitive foreign delegation meant to articulate India’s position on terrorism emanating from Pakistan. Sarma cited national security concerns, pointing to Gogoi’s alleged connections with Pakistan.

Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma alleged that Gogoi had stayed in Pakistan for 15 days, with his wife accompanying him for the first seven. “One of the MPs from Assam has not denied his prolonged stay in Pakistan—reportedly for two weeks. Credible documents show that his wife was drawing a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while residing in India,” the Chief Minister stated.

He also claimed that Gogoi took around 90 youths to the Pakistan Embassy in India, many of whom were reportedly unaware of their destination. “There are serious concerns about whether Gogoi visited sensitive locations like the Army Headquarters in Lahore, Sindh, or elsewhere in Pakistan. His arrival and departure through the Atari border have been officially recorded,” Sarma added.

Highlighting further concerns, Sarma noted, “He is the only Indian citizen in his family. His wife holds British citizenship, and his children reportedly have different foreign nationalities. He could easily change his passport.”

The Chief Minister said that documents such as passport and immigration records were being compiled as evidence and suggested that some of Gogoi’s actions may have inadvertently benefited the Pakistan Army.

In response, Gaurav Gogoi firmly denied all allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. He challenged the Chief Minister to present evidence and demanded his resignation if the claims could not be substantiated.

“Questions for the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam: 1) Will you resign if you fail to prove your allegations that my wife and I are agents of an enemy nation? 2) Will you answer questions about your own family? 3) Will you take action against the coal mafia plundering Assam’s hills and earning crores in undeclared income?” Gogoi said.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh confirmed that the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs had requested the Congress to submit names of four MPs for an overseas delegation to represent India’s stance on terrorism linked to Pakistan. The list, according to Sarma, included Gogoi.

Gogoi has reiterated his commitment to transparency and demanded that the Assam government focus on governance and pressing issues facing the state rather than personal smear campaigns.
