New Delhi/Dausa:
Notorious serial killer Dr. Devendra Sharma, who along with his gang committed more than 100 murders between 1995 and 2004, has been arrested by the Crime Branch from Dausa, Rajasthan. He was known for disposing of the victims’ bodies by feeding them to crocodiles to eliminate any evidence.
Released on Parole, Turned Into a Baba
In June 2023, Sharma was released from prison on a two-month parole. Instead of returning to jail, he went absconding and set up an ashram in Dausa, posing as a spiritual guru or “Baba”. He began offering treatments and distributing medicines to locals under the guise of spirituality.
Involvement in Illegal Kidney Transplants
For over a decade, Dr. Sharma ran a hospital in Rajasthan, where he was also involved in an illegal kidney transplant racket. Between 1998 and 2004, he performed around 125 illegal kidney transplants in collaboration with another doctor named Amit. His arrest in 2004 exposed the entire racket.
Charged in 21 Murder Cases, Convicted with Life Imprisonment and Death Sentence
Dr. Sharma has been charge-sheeted in 21 murder cases. He has already been sentenced to life imprisonment in seven cases and given the death penalty in one case in Delhi. Despite this, he was granted parole on June 9, 2023, after which he jumped parole and never returned to prison.
Tracked for Six Months Across Cities
The police launched a six-month-long manhunt for Sharma across Jaipur, Delhi, Aligarh, Agra, and Prayagraj. He was finally traced to Dausa, where he was arrested. During interrogation, Sharma confessed that he had similarly disappeared during a parole in 2020 as well.
How a Doctor Turned to Crime
Originally from Siwan, Bihar, Sharma completed his BAMS (Ayurvedic Medicine) degree and started a clinic named “Janata Clinic” in Dausa in 1984. He practiced medicine for 11 years. However, after being cheated of ₹11 lakh in a business fraud, he stepped into the world of crime.
Killed Drivers, Fed Bodies to Crocodiles
Initially involved in fake gas agency scams, Sharma later formed a gang and began targeting truck and taxi drivers. He would hire their vehicles, murder the drivers, feed the bodies to crocodiles, and sell the vehicles in the market. According to Sharma, he remembered the first 30 murders, but then lost count of how many people he had killed.
